IsMyJobWorthIt

Built by a fed who got tired of guessing.

Federal and military pay, benefits, and retirement math — done right.

Why this exists

When I started looking at outside offers a few years ago, I couldn't get a straight answer to one question: what's my federal retirement actually worth? Government websites buried the math. HR briefings glossed over the numbers. Online calculators either oversimplified the formulas or paywalled the parts that mattered.

So I built the tool I wished existed.

I'm a U.S. Air Force veteran with about a decade of military service, and I've spent nearly 20 years in federal law enforcement. Before federal service, I built software and data tools at Northrop Grumman and ESRI. I have an MBA with a concentration in finance and accounting.

I keep my full name and current agency off the page for folks who don't already know me. If we've worked together, you can probably figure out who runs this. The math published here is mine, and I link to the official OPM, DoD, and SSA sources throughout so any of it is verifiable.

The point

Federal and military employees deserve straight answers. Not jargon. Not sales pitches. Just the math, done right, so you can make a good decision for your family.

What I calculate

Federal (FERS)

  • FERS annuity with SCE and standard formulas
  • Retiree Annuity Supplement (RAS) with earnings test
  • TSP government match left behind
  • FEHB value vs. marketplace and Medicare
  • COLA across retirement lifetime
  • Present-value comparisons against outside offers
  • Military and non-SCE service credit

Military

  • BRS and High-3 retirement
  • Military buyback into FERS
  • TRICARE health insurance value
  • SBP break-even analysis
  • Civilian salary breakeven
  • BAH and military pay lookups
  • VA disability and CRSC offsets
